SPECIFICATIONS AND REGULATIONS

1.1. AIM OF THE COMPETITION

The aim is to encourage architecture students to produce ideas on re-evaluation of city, urban pattern and public spaces within the scope of “MY NEIGHBORHOOD: BAKIRKOY: International Architectural Design Idea Competition for Students” which is organized by UCTEA, Chamber of Architects, Istanbul Metropolitan Branch, Trakya Metropolitan Regional Representative.

1.2. TYPE AND FORMAT OF THE COMPETITION

Competition, According to UCTEA Chamber of Architects Competitions Regulation, is a free, open to international participation and single-stage architectural design idea competition for students. Registration and participation to the competition is free.

1.3. THEME AND SITE OF COMPETITION

1.4. TERMS OF PARTICIPATION

  • The competition is arranged for national and international students of architecture. Students can join the competition individually or by teams. It is suggested to enter the competition as a team as it is regarded important to work together and create an experience that will strengthen the interdisciplinary relationship.
  • It is required for Turkish and foreign architecture students studying abroad to submit an official student certificate prepared by their institution that certifies their studentship in 2017.
  • Foreign students studying in Turkey are required to submit an official student certificate prepared by their institution that certifies their studentship in 2017.
  • For Turkish citizens who are studying in Turkey, architecture students are required to have student memberships in the Chamber of Architects and submit membership document that is received from the Chamber of Architects. For the students of other disciplines in the team, if there is student membership in aforementioned chambers available, it is required to submit certification for student membership.
  • It is required for competitors to be undergraduate students; whereas team leader is required to be undergraduate architecture student.
  • Relatives of Jury members or directors who organized the Competition can not participate in the competition. In case of problems that may arise, the provisions of Article 17 (2) of the Chamber of Architects Competition Directive should be applied.
  • Participants should send an e-mail (bakirkoyyarisma@mimarist.org) by notifying name, address and school name. Those who assigned this e-mail will be registered. (It is sufficient for one member of a group to fulfill this condition.)

1.7. COMPULSORY PRINCIPALS FOR COMPETITORS

  • If there are signs indicating the identity of the participants and / or if the ID file or its contents are missing; The jury have the right to dismiss the project by execution of a written report.
  • Projects are required to be unique and not previously published elsewhere, or not awarded in an other competition. If the contrary situation is detected and this determination is approved by a qualified majority of the jury members, the project will be dismissed. If the project is awarded, all the prize will be taken back by the competition organization.

1.8. SITE VISIT

  • There is no obligation for seeing competition site. The jury suggests that competitors should have site visit.
  • A tour will be organized for the competitors who want to see the place on August 22, 2017 at 13.00. (Address: Sakızağacı Mah. İstanbul Cad. Şinasi Gürünlü Sk. No:21 Bakırköy, İSTANBUL)

1.9. DOCUMENTS PROVIDED TO COMPETITORS

  • Digital map showing the competition site in 1/1000 scale.

Documents can be downloaded from the official website of competition (www.mimarist.org). 

1.10. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • Schematic illustrations of urban and environmental approaches
  • 1/1000 scaled Site Plan (including information about vehicle circulation, pedestrian access, and public spaces relations)
  • 1/500 scaled Ground floor plan, sections and elevations of all 6 building blocks, including competition site (in relation with public space decisions).
  • 1/200 scaled plans, sections and elevations of at least 2 of the building blocks selected by the competitor.
  • Model picturing and / or 3D visualizations as drawings or renderings and / or texts, diagrams and sketches.
  • It is expected from competitors to present the textual material, in advance of an architectural report, on their conceptual and technical approaches in integrity with drawings on posters.

1.11. SUBMISSION AND PRESENTATION TECHNIQUE

There is only digital submission.

  • There are no restrictions on presentation technique. Any kind of expression (drawing, writing, coloring) is free.
  • All presentations should be submitted in JPEG format with a resolution of 300 dpi (2500x3500pixel) on at most 2 vertical A1 (59,4x84cm) size of posters.
  • The written architectural report that includes conceptual and technical explanations of design should be placed on the poster. In addition, a report on A4 sizes in Word and PDF format containing up to 500 words describing the general approach and decisions of the project should be submitted.
  • A special 5-digit nickname will be written in a box sized 1 cm x 5 cm on the upper right corner of each poster to be submitted. The characters used in the nickname should not be repeated or sequenced. The name of the digital files to be uploaded must be only consisting of this nickname.
  • For an easy display, there should be schema of suspension of posters on the bottom right corner of each poster.

The deadline for submission is 23:59 on Tuesday, October 17, 2017. After the designated deadline, the system will shut down and the files will not be accepted.

1.12. DIGITAL IDENTITY FILE

All participants must upload the following information in a digital folder;

  • The form of identification where the sample can be found in the Specifications (Appendix 1) (the form must be filled in).
  • Official student certificate (all documents must be scanned) indicating that all competitors who will take part in the competition is continuing their undergraduate studies
  • Student Membership Document of architecture students received from the Chamber of Architects

1.14. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Competitors can questions about the competition until 17:00 on 25th of August, 2017 via e-mail (bakirkoyyarisma@mimarist.org) under the heading of “MY NEIGHBORHOOD: BAKIRKÖY” International Participatory Student Architectural Design Idea Competition for Students with International Participation – Questions

The answers to the questions will be sent to all participants via the website within 6 day.

1.15. SUBMISSION DATE, PLACE AND CONDITIONS

The documents requested from the competitors must be uploaded to www.mimarlarodasi.istanbul until 23:59 on 17th of October, 2017.

In order to send the files, participants firstly have to register to the file uploading system of Istanbul Metropolitan Branch of the Chamber of Architects through www.mimarlarodasi.istanbul

HOW TO REGISTER?

  • Click the “Registration” button on the website homepage.
  • In the “User Name” section, the nickname consisting of 5 numbers that is determined by participants is written.
  • An active e-mail address for receiving an activatin link and a choosen password is entered to the “Mail” section, then click “New Registration” button.
  • If all information is entered correctly and complete, the activation e-mail will be delivered.
  • (Please add admin@mimarlarodasi.istanbul to your secure e-mail list if you do not receive an e-mail)
  • Click the link for activation for completing the operation.
  • Once the activation is completed, login to the homepage of system with the “Username” and “Password”.
  • Each participant (or team) has 500MB of disk space to send their files.
  • To upload a file, click on the “Upload” button in the “Select File” section. Then, select the desired file on the opening page, then click “Open” and the installation process starts.
  • The system is only allowed to upload files with the extension jpg – jpeg – gif – png – psd – tif – zip – rar – doc – docx – xls – xlsx. Files with different extensions are automatically rejected by the system.

The system will be completely shut down for new entries and for all file access at 23.59 on 17th of October, 2017. After downloaded by the organization, all the accounts and uploaded files will be completely deleted from the system.

1.18. EXHIBITION, PUBLICATION AND COLLOQUIUM

  • All projects participated to the competition will be exhibited between 3-4 November 2017 at the exhibition hall of Istanbul Chamber of Architects, Istanbul Metropolitan Branch, Karaköy.
  • All projects participated will be included in the competition book.
  • The copyright of all projects will belong to the author / authors. However, the Chamber of Architects, Istanbul Metropolitan Branch of UCTEA, which regulates the competition, and the Metropolitan Regional Representative of Trakya Büyükkent will have the right to publish and exhibit all the materials with indicating names of the author or authors.
